What is Agility?
Agility helps performance in activities that require you to change direction quickly whilst keeping balance, strength, speed and body control. Agility is not just about the speed with which an individual can change direction. But it’s also defined by the grace and fluidity of movement.
Agility is the ability to move and change direction and position of the body quickly and effectively while under control. It requires quick reflexes, coordination, balance, speed, and correct response to the changing situation.
Agility is the power to move quickly and easily. It allows someone to decelerate, accelerate and change direction while keeping perfect body control and without losing a lot of time in transition.
Agility helps ensure an athlete’s collective coordinative abilities and gives a competitive advantage for athletes with height, size, speed or strength challenges. Karate requires great level of agility. Skills can be enhanced with agility training drills as well as improving the specific individual fitness components of balance, speed, power and coordination.
The Importance of Agility Training: It has been said that outside of sport-specific skills, agility is the primary determining factor for success in sport. It is important to train agility in the same manner that any other skill would be trained. Using the proper progression is a necessity.
