Master Genzo Iwata was born on October 6, 1958, in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. From an early age, he trained in karate under the guidance of his father, the late O-Sensei Manzo Iwata, a respected figure in traditional Japanese martial arts. Growing up in this environment gave him a deep understanding of discipline, humility, and the classical principles that form the foundation of Shitoryu Karate. His early training established the strong technical and philosophical base that would guide his life and prepare him for future leadership in the international karate community.
In 1982, he received 5th Dan from both JKF Shitokai and the Japan Karatedo Federation, marking an important milestone in his technical development. His dedication to refinement continued, and in 1988, he received the Shihan qualification from JKF Shitokai. In 1993, he succeeded as the fifth headmaster of Nanban Sattoryu. This succession represented the continuation of an important martial lineage and reflected the trust placed in him as a guardian of traditional Japanese martial arts.
His leadership responsibilities continued to grow during the late 1990s and early 2000s. In the same year, he received 7th Dan from the Japan Karatedo Federation and obtained the Senior Coach qualification from the Japan Sports Association.
His progress continued over the following decade. In 2007, he received 8th Dan from JKF Shitokai, reflecting his technical excellence, long service, and respected position among senior instructors. In 2008, he was appointed Director General of JKF Shitokai, strengthening his role in organizational leadership and technical oversight. In 2009, he received the title of Kyoshi from the Japan Karatedo Federation.
In 2016, he was selected as a member of the Central Technical Committee of the Japan Karatedo Federation, one of the most important bodies for technical standards in Japanese karate. In the same year, he received the title of Hanshi from JKF Shitokai, representing one of the highest levels of recognition within the style.
In February 2017, he became President, Kaicho, of JKF Shitokai. This marked a new chapter in his leadership, as he guided both the technical and organizational direction of Shitokai in Japan. His technical ranking continued to advance. In May 2021, he received 8th Dan from the Japan Karatedo Federation. In December 2021, he received the title of Hanshi from the same federation. In August 2022, he obtained the First-Class Qualification Examiner certification from the Japan Karatedo Federation.
Today, Master Genzo Iwata holds two of the most important leadership positions in the world of Shitoryu Karate. He serves as President, Kaicho, of the World Shitoryu Karate Federation, where he supports the international development of Shitoryu and helps preserve the legacy of Kaiso Kenwa Mabuni and the late O-Sensei Manzo Iwata. He also serves as President, Kaicho, of JKF Shitokai, guiding one of the central Shitoryu organizations in Japan.
