摩文仁 賢雄 宗家
The Third Soke of Shitoryu Karatedo

Soke Kenyu Mabuni, 摩文仁 賢雄, is the third Soke of Shitoryu Karatedo in the Mabuni Kenei line. He is the grandson of Kaiso Kenwa Mabuni, the founder of Shitoryu, and the eldest son of the second Soke, Master Kenei Mabuni.

He was born on June 4, 1951, in Nishi-ku, Osaka, Japan. As a member of the Mabuni family, he grew up surrounded by the history, values, and spirit of Shitoryu Karatedo. His direct karate instruction came from his father, Soke Kenei Mabuni, who became the second Soke after Kaiso Kenwa Mabuni.

From a young age, Soke Kenyu Mabuni trained under his father and absorbed the principles of the Mabuni family tradition. His training was rooted in kata, kihon, body control, correct posture, timing, breathing, and the deeper meaning of karate as a path of character development.

During his youth, he also studied Ryukyu Kobudo, including Sai and Kon. He later received instruction in Kukishin-ryu Bojutsu from his father. These studies helped shape his understanding of classical martial arts, weapons, body mechanics, and traditional transmission.

Soke Kenyu Mabuni also followed a strong academic path. He studied at Nagoya Institute of Technology and later completed graduate studies at Tokyo Institute of Technology, receiving a master’s degree in 1979. After graduation, he worked as a consultant. His professional career gave him international experience and exposed him to the strong interest in karate outside Japan.

In 1999, while working in Hamburg, Germany, he taught karate locally. In 2000, he became an independent consultant and continued his karate practice while deepening his study under his father, Soke Kenei Mabuni. In 2004, he began teaching karate more formally to young students in Hachioji, Japan. His guidance helped develop junior champions and high-level competitors in Japanese national competitions.

In 2008, he joined the Hachioji Karatedo Federation, the Tokyo Karatedo Federation, and the Japan Karatedo Federation. His teaching expanded beyond one dojo environment, with strong attention to kata, traditional technique, and the development of young karateka.

As the third Soke of Shitoryu Karatedo, Soke Kenyu Mabuni carries the responsibility of preserving the Mabuni family legacy. His role represents the continuation of the teachings passed from Kaiso Kenwa Mabuni to Soke Kenei Mabuni, and then to the next generation.

His position is important because he stands at the meeting point of tradition and modern karate. He carries the name and responsibility of the Mabuni family while guiding karate practitioners in a period where karate has become both a traditional martial art and an international sport.

Soke Kenyu Mabuni’s work emphasizes correct kata study, technical accuracy, discipline, and respect for the original principles of Shitoryu. Through teaching, seminars, and leadership, he continues to support the preservation and transmission of Shitoryu Karatedo in Japan and throughout the world.

Soke Kenyu Mabuni is a living link to the Mabuni family tradition. His life reflects duty, continuity, discipline, and the responsibility of passing Shitoryu Karatedo to future generations with respect and accuracy.
