URAATE (裏当て “URA-ATE”)

URAATE (裏当て “URA-ATE”) is a striking technique in karate that focuses on penetrating through a target rather than just hitting the surface. Unlike a typical punch that delivers impact at the point of contact, URAATE transfers force beyond that, causing an effect on the opposite side of the target. This means that instead of stopping at the impact point, the energy continues through, creating a shock deep inside. A good example is in board breaking—if only the last board breaks, it shows that the force traveled all the way through rather than being absorbed by the first boards.

This concept is useful in both demonstrations and combat. In fighting, a well-executed URAATE strike can cause internal damage or delayed pain, even if the opponent appears to block it. The key to URAATE is not brute strength but proper body mechanics—using the hips, follow-through, and a snapping motion to drive energy forward. When done correctly, it feels as if the strike is “passing through” the target, making it more effective and powerful.
